Jackrabbits are delightful creatures. If you listen very carefully you can hear them laughing as they frolic in the sage in the pre-dawn hours. They are the most commonly seen mammals here. They can run 40 MPH. They eat almost any kind of plant and seem to be able to get under, over or through almost any kind of a fence. They are always on the lookout for the coyotes, their primary predator.
Coyotes make wonderful sounds, eat jackrabbits, juniper berries, dozens of rodents every day, and if you let them they will eat your pets. They hunt night and day but are particularly active around dawn and dusk. They tend to be very shy, so you may be here awhile before you see one. They are individuals, however, and some are quite bold. Feeding them is a very bad idea. Trying to make a pet of one is not a good idea either, for you or the coyote.
